#1: Apple, Inc. (AAPL)

Apple is Berkshire’s largest position by far, due in large part to Apple’s amazing rally over the past few years.

The technology company designs, manufactures and sells products such as iPhones, iPads, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV. Apple also has a services business that sells music, apps, and subscriptions.

Apple is also a top holding of other influential investors, such as Kevin O’Leary.

On November 2nd, 2023, Apple reported results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2023 (Apple’s fiscal year ends the last Saturday in September). It grew its sales 3% over last year’s quarter thanks to record sales of iPhone for a fourth quarter and all-time high Service sales. The iPhone segment generated 49% of total sales while Service sales comprised 25% of total sales. Earnings-per-share grew 13%, from $1.29 to $1.46, and exceeded the analysts’ consensus by $0.07.

#2: Bank of America Corporation (BAC)

Berkshire Hathaway owns just over 1 billion shares of Bank of America stock, worth $29 billion as of the latest 13F filing.

Bank of America, headquartered in Charlotte, NC, provides traditional banking services, as well as nonbanking financial services to customers all over the world. Its operations include Consumer Banking, Wealth & Investment Management and Global Banking & Markets.

Bank of America was founded in 1904, and should produce about $89 billion in revenue this year. Bank of America is one of the largest financial stocks in the world.

#3: American Express Company (AXP)

American Express is one of Berkshire’s longest-held stocks. American Express is a credit card company that operates the following business units: US Card Services, International Consumer and Network Services, Global Commercial Services, and Global Merchant Services. American Express was founded in 1850.

American Express reported its third quarter earnings results on October 20. The company generated revenues of $15.4 billion during the quarter, which was 13% more than during the previous year’s quarter. The revenue increase was based on a recovery for American Express’ business compared to the previous year’s quarter, with increased international travel being a tailwind for the company. Revenues were up sequentially, and they beat estimates slightly.

#4: The Coca-Cola Company (KO)

Coca-Cola is the world’s largest beverage company, as it owns or licenses more than 500 unique nonalcoholic brands. Since the company’s founding in 1886, it has spread to more than 200 countries worldwide.

The company also has an exceptional 59-year dividend increase streak.

Coca-Cola posted third quarter earnings on October 24th, 2023, and results were much better than expectations. Adjusted earnings-per-share came to 74 cents, which was a nickel better than estimates. Revenue was $12 billion, up 8.1% year-over-year, and a full $580 million ahead of expectations.

Organic revenue was up 11% during the quarter, beating estimates by 4%. The company saw gains in Latin America (+20%), EMEA (+20%), North America (+9%), Bottling Investments (+18%), and Global Ventures (+9%). Volume was up 2%, while price and mix accounted for a 9% gain in the top line.

#5: Chevron Corporation (CVX)

Chevron is the fourth-largest oil major in the world based on market cap. Chevron prices some natural gas volumes based on the oil price, meaning nearly 75% of its output is priced based on the oil price. As a result, Chevron is more leveraged to the oil price than the other oil majors.

In early February, Chevron reported (2/2/24) financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023. Thanks to a slight improvement in the price of oil triggered by production cuts by OPEC and Russia and 7% production growth thanks to the acquisition of PDC Energy, earnings-per-share grew 13% sequentially, from $3.05 to $3.45, and exceeded the analysts’ consensus by $0.23.

#6: Occidental Petroleum (OXY)

Occidental Petroleum is an international oil and gas exploration and production company with operations in the U.S., the Middle East, and Latin America. It has a market capitalization of $60 billion. While the company also has a midstream and a chemical segment, it is much more sensitive to the price of oil than the integrated oil majors.

In early November, Occidental reported (11/7/23) financial results for the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Its average realized prices of oil grew 10% and its average realized gas prices jumped 41% over the prior quarter. As a result, earnings-per-share grew 74% sequentially, from $0.68 to $1.18.

#7: The Kraft-Heinz Company (KHC)

KraftHeinz is a processed food and beverages company which owns a product portfolio that includes food products such as condiments, sauces, cheese & dairy, frozen & chilled meals, and infant diet & nutrition. The company was created in 2015 in a merger between Kraft Food Group and H. J. Heinz Company, orchestrated by Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital.

The Kraft-Heinz Company reported its fourth quarter earnings results on February 14. The company reported that its revenues totaled $6.9 billion during the quarter, which was down 7% compared to the revenues that Kraft-Heinz generated during the previous year’s period.

#8: Moody’s Corporation (MCO)

Moody’s was created back in 1909, becoming the first company to analyze securities and rate their investment quality for investors on a large scale. Moody’s began with its Analyses of Railroad Investments in 1909 and has blossomed into the company we know today, with over $6 billion in annual revenue.

Moody’s posted third quarter earnings on October 25th, 2023, and results were better than expected on both the top and bottom lines. Adjusted earnings-per-share were $2.43, beating estimates by 15 cents. That was also up from $2.30 in Q2, and up sharply from $1.85 a year ago. Revenue soared 18% year-over-year to $1.5 billion, which was $40 million ahead of expectations. The company noted a rebound in bond issuance as driving better revenue.

#9: DaVita Inc. (DVA)

Berkshire’s investment portfolio contains just over 36 million shares of DaVita, Inc., equating to a total investment of $2.60 billion at the time of the last 13F filing. DaVita is slightly more than 1% of Berkshire’s overall investment portfolio.

DaVita provides kidney dialysis services for patients suffering from chronic kidney failure or end stage renal disease. The company operates kidney dialysis centers and provides related lab services in outpatient dialysis centers.

#10: Citigroup Inc. (C)

Dividend Yield: 3.9%
Percent of Warren Buffett’s Portfolio: 0.82%

Citigroup is a global juggernaut in credit cards, commercial banking, trading, and a variety of other financial activities. It has thousands of branches and produces about $75 billion in annual revenue.

Citigroup posted fourth quarter and full-year earnings on January 12th, 2024, and results were somewhat mixed. The bank posted adjusted earnings-per-share of 84 cents, which was 11 cents ahead of expectations. Revenue was off 3.3% year-over-year to $17.4 billion, missing estimates by a big margin of $1.36 billion. However, excluding the company’s revaluation based upon Argentina’s volatile currency moves, revenue would have actually risen 2% year-over-year.

#11: VeriSign, Inc. (VRSN)

VeriSign is a globally diversified provider of domain name registry services and Internet security software. The company operates in a single segment, and has a significant international presence.

#12: The Kroger Co. (KR)

Founded in 1883 and headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kroger is one of the largest retailers in the U.S. The company has nearly 2,800 retail stores under two dozen banners, along with fuel centers, pharmacies and jewelry stores in 35 states. The company serves nearly 11 million customers a day.

On November 30th, 2023, Kroger reported third quarter 2023 results for the period ending November 4th, 2023 (Kroger’s fiscal year ends the Saturday closest January 31st.) For the quarter, Kroger reported $34.0 billion in sales, down 0.6% compared to Q3 2022. Excluding fuel, sales decreased 0.5% compared to the year ago period. Adjusted earnings-per-share equaled $0.95 compared to $0.88 in 2Q22.

#13: Visa Inc. (V)

Visa is the world’s leader in digital payments, with activity in more than 200 countries. The company’s global processing network provides secure and reliable payments around the world and is capable of handling more than 65,000 transactions a second.

On January 25th, 2024, Visa reported first quarter 2024 results for the period ending December 31st, 2023. (Visa’s fiscal year ends September 30th.) For the quarter, Visa generated revenue of $8.6 billion, adjusted net income of $4.9 billion and adjusted earnings-per-share of $2.41, marking increases of 9%, 8% and 11%, respectively.

These results were driven by an 8% gain in Payments Volume, a 16% gain in Cross-Border Volume and a 9% gain in Processed Transactions. Visa processed 57.5 billion transactions in the quarter.

#14: Mastercard Inc. (MA)

MasterCard is a world leader in electronic payments. The company partners with 25,000 financial institutions around the world to provide an electronic payment network. MasterCard has more than 3.1 billion credit and debit cards in use.

On January 31st, 2024, MasterCard released fourth quarter and full year results for the period ending December 31st, 2023. For the quarter, revenue grew 13% to $6.5 billion, which was $20 million above estimates. Adjusted earnings-per-share of $3.18 compared favorably to $2.65 in the prior year and was $0.10 better than expected. For 2023, revenue grew 13% to $25.1 billion while adjusted earnings-per-share of $11.83 compared to $10.22 in the prior year.

#15: Capital One Financial (COF)

Capital One Financial Corp. is one of the largest providers of MasterCard and Visa credit cards in the U.S. and provides various financial products and services in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The company had $348.0 billion in deposits and $478 billion in assets under management as of the end of 2023, making it the 10th largest bank in the US.

On January 25th, 2024, Capital One released its fourth quarter and full year 2023 results for the period ending December 31st, 2023. For the quarter, the company’s net income for the fourth quarter of 2023 was $706 million, or $1.67 per diluted common share, compared with net income of $1.8 billion, or $4.45 per diluted common share, in the third quarter of 2023, and with net income of $1.2 billion, or $3.03 per diluted common share in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Aon is a professional services firm headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The company provides a variety of services including consulting, risk management, and health plan management. Aon has approximately 500 offices worldwide that serve 120 countries through a workforce that numbers about 50,000. Aon should generate about $13.2 billion in revenue this year.

Aon posted third quarter earnings on October 27th, 2023, and results were better than expected on both the top and bottom lines. Adjusted earnings-per-share came to $2.32, which was 11 cents ahead of expectations. Revenue was up almost 10% year-over-year to $3 billion, and beat estimates by $110 million. This included 6% organic revenue growth, along with a 2% favorable impact from fiduciary investment income and a further 2% favorable impact from forex translation.
